I'm a proud owner of a 1984 Volkswagen Jetta; I bought this used car back in 5/90 when the odometer read 77,500 miles. On 5/8/99, it reached 241,111 miles, and is still going strong.
Since owning this car, I have performed several maintenance tasks which included a) changing motor oil, spark plugs, rotor and cap, oil/fuel/air/transmission filters, transmission fluid, brake fluid, MacPherson struts and shock absorbers, alternator, voltage regulator, brake pads, radiator, battery, starter motor, CV joint/transaxles, timing belt, drive belts, and oxygen sensor; b) adjusting/setting ignition timing, valve clearances, and idle speed.
I have no formal automotive technical training, but these maintenance tasks have taught me a lot about caring for a car.
A particularly annoying starter problem that plagues many Golf, Jetta, Scirocco, and Audi Quantum cars, was recently put to rest by installing a starter solenoid trigger voltage booster relay.
