Mathematics History
I have under development a brief history of mathematics that applies
mainly to the mathematics that is currently taught in grade school. Since
La Sierra University is a church (Seventh-Day Adventist) related school
most students know and care about the Bible. Although the Bible was never
intended to be a mathematics textbook, there are many interesting
mathematical facts in the Bible.
Chapters
My first chapter is entitled Bible Numbers. It explores some interesting
uses of numbers, such as the value of pi.
The second chapter deals with Numerology in the Bible. It looks at
special numbers, like 666. The importance of 12 to both Judaism and
Christianity is another topic. For a brief summary paper that I presented along these lines at the Conference on Science and Faith at Andrews University in Michigan in August 1998 see
Numerology and the Bible.
There are three more chapters that are partially complete: Numeration
Systems, Geometry, and Arithmetic & Algebra.
